The Importance of Godly Friendships

Have y’all ever heard that saying “garbage in, garbage out”? I know it alllllll too well. My Momma said that non-stop to my brother and I, growing up. I used to be like “yeah, yeah, okay mom” every single time I heard it. Now that I’m older I realize the true value that lies within those words, in many aspects. Whether it’s the music you listen to, shows you watch or even food, that leads to certain language, behaviors and consequences, there is such a depth to those words when it comes to friendships, in particular. At least for me.

I was never one to be lucky with friends. I want(ed) to be friends with any and every person I meet, and succeed at that most of the time. However, there are times when you’re taken advantage of, used, betrayed and accused, all in the name of someone trying to protect their own feelings. It happens. No friendship is perfect, but it is vital that we have good Godly friends. Our friends influence so much of who we are, what we become and what we do with our free time. Thus encompassing that “garbage in, garbage out” philosophy. Through all the drama and rough friendships in life, all my strong and everlasting relationships have seemingly been based upon one thing- God.

My best friend growing up was/is also Christian. You have no idea how many times that helped save me. I have so many other soulmate friends who saved me in similar ways, also due to their faith in God. I am eternally grateful for these Godly people and the influence they have had, and continue to have, on my life. I wish everyone had that- and I believe everyone can. It’s crucial for Christians, though, to have wise and Godly counsel.

In your walk with God, it matters who we will call friends and hang out with because in the Bible, it says, “Walk with the wise and become wise for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Proverbs 13:20

Friends that respect God are wise people and they most likely give good advice, seeing that it’s based upon the teachings of the wisest of all time.

The company you walk with can often determine the blessings you receive from God. The Bible says, “Do not be deceived, bad company corrupts good morals”. 1 Corinthians 15:33

So I want to lovingly ask you, what types of friends do you have? Are they Christian? Or are they “christian”? Where are they leading you in life? Are you proud of it?

True friendship is based on Christ, we need friends that will encourage and uplift us.

Friendships matter. Your friends matter. Be picky.
